Demulsifiers

PZT-DEMUL-1 is a surfactant blend, often an ethoxylated block copolymer, dissolved in an aromatic or other solvent carrier. It migrates to the oil-water interface in produced crude oil emulsions, displacing the natural emulsifying agents (asphaltenes, resins, fine solids) and allowing water droplets to coalesce and settle out by gravity or in separation vessels. Often the single highest-value chemical in upstream production chemistry: without an effective demulsifier, meeting sales spec can require far more expensive heat treatment or long settling residence times.

Use Cases & Applications

Pros
  • Fast-acting, effective at relatively low ppm dosages
  • Formulations can be custom-tuned per crude and produced-water chemistry via lab bottle testing
Cons & Limitations
  • No universal formula - highly crude-specific, requiring ongoing lab optimization as reservoir/water chemistry changes over field life
  • Wrong formulation or dosage can actually stabilize the emulsion further
  • Performance is temperature-sensitive; colder produced fluids need higher dosage or supplemental heat
