Lubricity Meter

PZT-LAB-LM
Lubricity meter with torque arm, test block and rotating ring assembly

Torque and drag decide how far a lateral can be pushed, and lubricant selection is usually argued on vendor claims rather than measurement. This instrument replicates downhole friction between metal surfaces immersed in the fluid and reports three things: the lubricity coefficient, where lower is better; film strength, meaning whether the protective layer between drill string and casing survives load; and the torque values those produce. A fluid can show an acceptable coefficient and still have film strength that collapses under load, which is the failure that shows up as tool wear rather than as a number on the mud report.

Applications

  • Lubricity testing of OBM and WBM systems
  • Film strength monitoring during drilling operations
  • Lubricant and additive performance evaluation
  • Torque and drag reduction programmes
  • Extended-reach and horizontal well fluid design
