PZT-PHPA-P partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide is a long-chain, synthetic anionic polymer derived from acrylamide monomer, partially hydrolyzed to introduce carboxylate groups along the backbone. It adsorbs onto shale and clay cutting surfaces through hydrogen bonding, physically encapsulating them and inhibiting hydration and dispersion of reactive shale into the mud, while also contributing viscosity and acting as a selective flocculant. Meaningfully closes the shale-inhibition performance gap between water-based and oil-based mud, letting operators drill reactive shale sections on WBM while retaining WBM's lower cost and easier disposal profile.
