Bentonite
PZT-BENT-1 is a naturally occurring sodium montmorillonite swelling clay that hydrates and exfoliates into thin platelets in freshwater. The platelets carry a negative face charge and positive edge charge, building a reversible "house of cards" gel structure that provides viscosity and gel strength while plating out on the wellbore wall as a thin, low-permeability filter cake. The lowest-cost bulk viscosifier and wall-cake builder available, with a self-healing gel structure that re-forms quickly after shear. Requires organophilic pre-treatment before use in oil-based mud.

Use Cases & Applications
- Base viscosifier and gel-strength builder for freshwater WBM
- Filter-cake/wall-building agent to control fluid loss into permeable formations
Pros
- Very low cost per barrel treated
- Builds a thin, tough filter cake at ambient to moderate temperature
- Globally abundant, well-characterized material
Cons & Limitations
- Flocculates and loses performance in saltwater or high-hardness water
- Breaks down above roughly 250°F (121°C)
- Essentially non-functional in oil-based mud without organophilic (oil-wetted) treatment first
